Ostróda

Previously the crown jewel of Eastern Prussia, today the summer capital of Western Mazury. Surrounded by 9 lakes Ostróda is a dynamically developing tourist resort. There are many performances and happenings organized during summer, e.g.: popular concerts on Drwęckie Lake pier. A central port for three channels – Ostróda-Elbląg, Ostróda-Stare Jabłonki, Ostróda-Iława – is operating here. The River Drwęca runs through Drwęckie Lake. Such a location creates great conditions for water sports fans and tourists. And when the visitors get tired, they can rest while sightseeing, sunbathing on many beaches, partying in Ostróda’s bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants or just by contemplating the natural beauty of the region. A promenade, near the pier, is full of cozy cafes and restaurants, from where the tourist can see the stunts performed by people using cable waterskiing installation. This very modern and one of the longest courses (total length of 800m – 0.5 mile) in Poland began operating as of July 2008. Not far from the promenade stands a majestic Teutonic castle. Sometimes the tourist are taken back in time and allowed to join a feast organized by local knights’ brotherhoods. Ostróda's castle was the place where the body of Ulrich von Jungingen was brought after the famous lost battle of Grunwald. A couple of hundred years later the castle was inhabited by Napoleon, who temporarily ruled his empire from here.

Strolling across Ostróda’s city centre it is hard not to notice some architectonical gems: Blessed Virgin Mary and Evangelical (Methodist) churches’ towers. Ostróda’s panorama can be seen from an observation tower situated in the Evangelical church.
