Gołdap – the place for adventure seekers.
Gołdap County and south-eastern part of Kaliningrad Oblast may be called a microregion not only because of its unique microclimate, but also because of its distinctiveness and the beauty of the local geographical and natural environment. There are many landscape, natural and monument sights to be seen on both sides of the border. Here you can find the major highlands of Masuria, as well as the only boreal wilderness, exhibiting characteristics of taiga, in this part of Europe. There is a lot of glacial lakes and Gołdapa River, which is very appealing to canoeing enthusiasts because of its connection to Węgorapa River through Brożajcki canal. This water trail leads even further, up until you meet the Russian Pregoła River. The unique lichen appearing around Żytkiejmy village is a proof of the cleanest air in Central Europe, a fact proven recently by a scientific study. Therefore it is not by an accident that Gołdap County is at the moment the only spa and health resort in Warmia and Mazury Province. It is also not by any coincident than the Puszcza Romincka Landscape Park was appointed in 1998. The Russian side appointed Wisztynieckij Lies Park in 1994, the name of which derives from the picturesque Wisztynieckie Lake on the Lithuanian-Russian border. This part of the Kaliningrad Oblast has many interesting historic places, for example: Czistyje Prudy, where the famous Lithuanian poet – Kristionas Donelaitis – lived, or Jasnaja Polana, where the well known Trakehner horse breed was created. The Puszcza Romincka Landscape Park is also the home of the 15 Wilhelm the Second’s Stones (8 on Polish, and 7 on Russian side of the border). The German Emperor and King of Prussia used these forests as a hunting ground between late 19th and early 20th century, and so the Stones commemorate the Emperor’s deer-hunting successes. In summer you can enjoy the multitude of nearby lakes, the aforementioned canoeing trail, walking and cycling trails, an inoperative historic railway with its famous 100-feet-tall bridges in Stańczyki and Russian Tokariewka villages. Not far from this railway, there exists a genuine pyramid, a family tomb of Farenheid family. In Zatyki, a village near Tatarska Mountain, there is one of the biggest wild animals farm in Poland. A perfect place for a photo-safari. Should you need a place for a rest, you can spend a night at one of the farms offering lodgings. Another element distinguishing this location from other tourist centres in the region is the range of possible activities throughout the whole year. An example of this is Piękna Góra (Piękna Mt.) not far from Gołdap city centre. The slope is equipped with a chair lift, two ski lifts (350 and 550 metres) and one of the best luge tracks in Europe. The local ‘Tourism development strategy plan’ focuses on active and ‘professional’ tourism. The ecological planning and organizing tourism in cooperation with Russian partners is crucial for the region.
