Giżycko the largest city and tourist centre in the Great Masurian Lakes region. It is situated in its centre, between Kisajno and Niegocin lakes. Thanks to the beautiful location, Giżycko is one of the biggest recreational and water sports centres in Poland. The city’s history goes back to 14th century, when Teutonic Knights built their castle on a strategically important hill between lakes in 1340. The town privileges, including town crest and seal, were bestowed in 1612. At the end of 20th century, the development of road and railway system brought much interest to this charming resort in Mazury. The system of channels connecting the Great Masurian Lakes as well as regular cruise boat service enabled the development of tourism. At the same time a yacht harbour and a swimming pool were opened near Niegocin Lake.
Giżycko and its surroundings are very attractive at any given time of the year. The Masurian forests encourage long walks, cycling trips and mushrooming. Taking a camcorder or a camera to record the beauty of the flora and fauna is always a good idea. The fans of active forms of recreation are drawn to horse riding centres adapted for various levels of horse riding skills. Giżycko's winter landscape has melancholic air about it and offers the atmosphere of tranquility. The atmosphere created by forests, piers, boats and yachts covered with thick snow.
