From the land of Varmia and Masuria

A bird’s eye view of Varmia and Masuria creates a deceptive impression that the local towns are extremely small. It is obvious even from the perspective of the sky, however, that these towns have a long and rich history. The hearts of such towns, where we are bound to see a town hall, a church and a castle, all of them endowed with more or less tapering spires, are surrounded by newly created modern districts. It is typical of the local towns to encompass lakes, be immersed in green scenery and intersected by long and winding rivers.

The Łyna, the Drwęca, the Krutynia, the Pisa, the Pasłęka and many other rivers flow across meadows and woodland areas. They frequently flow into lakes, which they meet on the way, and disappear in their waters, but finally emerge in the river beds again and proudly flow ahead.

Masurian lakes resemble huge mirrors in which the sky examines its marvellous reflection. From a bird’s eye view one can see almost every detail – bays, isthmuses, edges of every single body of water, water zones and small islands.

Due to their inaccessibility local lake islands seem really mysterious, stimulate our imagination and, when inhabited by cormorants, look like scary sacred places of the past.

Along with lakes one of the greatest attractions of the region are omnipresent  forests. The waters of lakes such as Śniardwy, Bełdan, Mokre or Nidzkie reflect the impressive view of high densely-growing pines trees. Today’s forests differ from what they used to be in terms of area and structure.  The majority of present woodland areas are coniferous forests.

The region of several thousand lakes, huge forests and numerous unique historic sites obviously attracts many tourists from the whole country and abroad. The history of Varmia and Masuria has been created by various peoples and nations; thus, it is not uncommon to spot here traces of many cultures and religions. In the present publication you will find descriptions of Teutonic castles, Prussian magnates’ palaces, monuments of technology, ruins of Hitler’s headquarters and many places of religious worship.

Do join us in our amazing trip across the region of Varmia and Masuria, where everybody is bound to find something special for themselves. Water, wildlife and history lovers, as well as  anglers and many others will be enchanted by the unique character and unquestionable beauty of this land.
