Elbląg is the oldest town in the province of Varmia and Masuria (civic rights granted in 1246) and the second in the region as to the population (about 126,000 inhabitants); it is also a sea port with a marina for tourist ships to Ostróda (along the Elbląg Canal, famous for a system of unique shipways), Krynica Morska, Frombork and Kaliningrad. The settlement which started to develop near the castle received civic rights in 1246. Great natural conditions stimulated the development of the sea port, which was a significant war-time harbour in king Sigmund August’s time.
