Sorkwity is a village founded on 16th May 1379 by the Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights – Winrich von Kniprode, 7.5 miles from Mrągowo and 9.5 miles form Biskupiec Reszelski. Sorkwity is situated between Gielądzkie and Lampackie lakes, where one of the most beautiful and popular canoeing routes in Mazury – Krutynia River Trail – originates. The trail passes many points providing services for the tourist. The famous writer – Melchior Wańkowicz – enjoyed this very route in 1934 and his renowned book, ‘Na tropach Smętka’, is the result of this trip. Some of the tourist attractions of Sorkwity are:
- Neo-gothic palace in an old park on the bank of Lampackie Lake, built around 1850-1856 by von Mirbach family in the place where Jan Zygmunt Bronikowski had his residence (built in 1788). The palace burned down in 1914, and was later rebuilt in 1920s ;
- Evangelic church, mentioned in historical chronicles as early as 1470, the nowadays building is dated 1689, rebuilt in 1750-1777, the tower from 1701-1702 topped with Bronikowski family crest on a banner with the date of 1777. The church serves as a parish of Evangelical Church of Augsburg Confession. The church has a late-Renaissance main altar (1642), baroque pulpit made by Izaak Riga from Kaliningrad (1701). Late-Renaissance patron box (dated around 1615) with von Schlieben and von Groeben families crests in cartouches. Baroque angel sculpture hanging in front of the altar, used as a baptismal font ;
- A commemorative obelisk for Jan Fryderyk Goerke (1750-1822), born in Sorkwity, the creator of Prussian army’s health service and its chief medic. The obelisk stands in close vicinity of the church ;
- Antique cemetery ;
- Railway bridge, a relic of nineteenth century technology, over a stream connecting Gielądzkie and Lampackie lakes ;
- Educational route on a peninsula on Lampackie Lake, in a forest called ‘Sorkwity Park’, prepared to present a forest as a complex set of elements and processes creating our environment. The trail begins with a majestic walk with ash trees on each side, the path leads into an old forest containing many beautiful, up to 250-years-old trees such as oak, beech, fir, hornbeam, spruce and European larch.
